A new look at how seismic waves lose energy is helping researchers see more clearly into one of Taiwan’s most geologically active regions. By tracking attenuation — the gradual loss of seismic energy as waves move through Earth — scientists have mapped faults, rock types, and deeper structures beneath the island’s southern convergence zone.

The work comes from the Southern Array for the Lithosphere and Uplift of Taiwan Experiment, or SALUTE, a high-density seismographic network that collected data from December 2020 to December 2023. In a study published in Geophysical Research Letters, Lin and colleagues focused on the boundary where the Eurasian plate meets the Luzon Arc, an area described as understudied and actively deforming.
Using both overall attenuation rates and the relative attenuation of P and S waves, the researchers built 2D and 3D models of the subsurface. Those models showed clear attenuation changes along major faults, along with distinct lithologies and a better-defined Luzon forearc block offshore of Taiwan. The forearc block, which had been poorly imaged before, appears to dip northward and narrow as it approaches the convergence zone.
The study also found zones of high attenuation in the lower crust that the authors link to fluid-rich, ductile regions associated with tectonic tremors. The team says the attenuation images agree well with earlier velocity-based seismic studies, while also revealing transition zones that had been difficult to capture with other methods.
The results matter because they add detail to a region where the crust is being actively reshaped, and that detail could improve seismic hazard planning. Still, the authors frame the work as part of a broader effort to refine what is known about the region rather than a final map of every structure below Taiwan.
